Our Service & Liturgy

Worship services are at the heart of what goes on at Messiah. Each Sunday, we gather to pray, praise, learn, give thanks, and celebrate the Holy Eucharist.

Our liturgy, the public expression of our active Christian faith, is based on the Book of Common Prayer. Throughout most of the year, we celebrate Rite I at 8:00 AM and Rite II at 10:30 AM. We also celebrate an informal Eucharist at noon on Wednesdays.

Our services are traditional and reverent, but we are not stuffy or exclusive. All are truly welcome to join us in worship, and you should feel comfortable to come as you are.

Children are also welcome at all of Messiah’s worship services. There is even a quiet play area within the sanctuary to accommodate children under 7 and their parents.

Music

Music is a vital part of our worship at Messiah because it is such a powerful and intimate response to God’s grace and love in our lives.

On most Sundays throughout the year, the 10:30 service is a choral Eucharist that incorporates service music, hymns, and choir anthems. Most of Messiah’s music is taken from the Hymnal 1982, but we also use selections from other sources, including Lift Every Voice and Sing and Now the Feast & Celebration.

Messiah also features a wonderful choir, which is led by our organist and choir director, Jim Gautsch. The choir rehearses at 7:00 on Thursday evenings and at 10:00 on Sunday mornings. Please contact Jim or the parish administrator for information on joining the choir.

Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Acolytes

Laypeople at Messiah are encouraged to assist the priest in the leading of worship. Lay Eucharistic Ministers assist in the distribution of the elements and in the Prayers of the People, lectors share the appointed scripture readings, and acolytes bear symbols of faith and assist in the preparation of consecrated elements. Please contact Father Tim+ or Brian Jenkins If you are interested in receiving training to serve on the altar.

Altar Guild

Laypeople are also encouraged to assist by serving on the Altar Guild. Members of the guild prepare the sanctuary for worship. They are the stewards of the altar, vestments, vessels, and linens. Although their work sometimes goes unnoticed, their service is invaluable to Messiah’s worship. Please contact Anne Vanneman if you are interested in joining the Altar Guild.
