Weekly Ongoing Activities:
One Straw Farm Community-Supported Agriculture Pick Up Site: Mondays through Nov. 15thEvery Monday during the growing season, One Straw Farm's Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) shareholders pick up their produce under the maple tree in the front close from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. Messiah's participation as a host site allows us to donate shares of produce to St. Matthias Episcopal Church's food outreach programs, as well as assistance to neighbors of the Faith Community of Peace on E. Lorraine Avenue. Mid Week Eucharist Continues: Wednesdays at NoonA service of Holy Eucharist is offered in the church each Wednesday. What a wonderful way to pause in the middle of a hectic week and get re-centered. Come join us! Open Book Group: Sept. 8thThe Book Discussion Group meets in the lower level Family Room to talk about a book, available in paperback or from your local library. Non-church members are always welcome to join in -- the only requirement for coming and joining the conversation is to read the book beforehand. We will be discussing One Thousand White Women, by Jim Fergus on Wednesday, Sept. 8th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and hope to see you there! Choir Rehearsal Starts: Sept. 9thMessiah's choir rehearses Thursday evenings from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. and Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. throughout the program year, and new members are always welcome to come and make a joyful noise! You don't even need to read music -- but you must be able to commit to attending rehearsals regularly. Rehearsals take place in the Choir Room behind the stage in the Upper Hall. The first rehearsal for the program year is on September 9th, so now is a good time to come and join Messiah's choir family. Food for the Poor Sunday: Sept. 12thOn September 12th, the Rev. Dr. John Moulden, of Food for the Poor, Inc., will preach at both services and give a presentation in the Lower Hall beginning at 9:15 a.m. Food for the Poor is the number one international relief and development charity in the U.S., feeding 2 million poor every day. Its relief programs and projects help children and the poorest of the poor by providing food, housing, health care, education, water projects, emergency relief and micro-enterprise assistance in the Caribbean and Latin America. Dr. Moulden's presentation will the the first Messiah Forum of our new program year. Please come to hear him preach and talk about the important work of this organization. Moveable Feast Desserts Due: Sept. 12thMembers of the Church of the Messiah's Moveable Feast Baking Team bake scrumptious desserts and bring them to the church for people who are HIV positive or who have cancer. Carol Waldhauser, the program's coordinator, gathers and delivers these desserts to Moveable Feast, a nonprofit organization that serves nutritious meals to its homebound clients in Central Maryland. This happens on the second Sunday of every month, so interested bakers may leave their individually-wrapped, homemade offerings (labeled "For Moveable Feast") in the Lower Hall kitchen on Sunday morning, Sept. 12th. Handbell Choir Rehearsal Begins: Sept. 12thLove music, but shy about singing? Messiah's Handbell Choir needs members! Messiah's newest musical group will start rehearsals on Sunday, September 12th from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs Choir Room behind the stage. Anyone interested is very welcome to join; if you're unsure, come and see! Sunday School Begins: Sept. 19thChristian formation for all ages resumes on Sunday, September 19th! Blessing of the Backpacks, Briefcases, and Book Bags: Sept. 19thWe will
honor the work of teachers and students of all kinds at both services on Sunday,
September 19th. Please bring your backpacks etc. to church that day for a
blessing to mark the beginning of the new school year. Safeguarding God's Children Workshop: Sept. 19thThe
Rev. Wes Wubbenhorst, Youth Missioner for the Diocese
of Maryland, will hold a training workshop at Messiah on Sunday, September
19th, beginning at Noon. Safeguarding God’s Children is a training
program in sexual abuse awareness for clergy, Sunday school teachers, nursery
workers, vestry members, and others who work with minors in our churches.
The workshop lasts for about three hours and lunch will be provided. To

Prayer Ball Painting Make-up Day: Sept. 19thOn September 19, those who made a prayer ball at our parish retreat in June but could not attend the painting session on July 10 will have an opportunity to decorate their prayer balls. Painting supplies will be available in the lower church hall after the services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. If you are unable to come to services that day, please nominate someone to decorate your ball in your place. (And if you cannot remember what your prayer ball looks like, ask Tim+. The prayer balls are on silent retreat in his office.) Once all the prayer balls have been painted, our artist friend Barbara will glaze and fire them. We will ask Bishop Sutton to bless them during his visit to us on November 28th.
